Alpha Male Plus Recall: Tadalafil in Fruit Chews

Quick answer

On July 20, 2021, Alpha Male Plus of Tucson, Arizona announced a recall of all lots of its Alpha Male Plus Male Enhancer fruit chews within expiry. The product contained tadalafil that its label did not declare. The notice told buyers to stop using it, return or discard it, and report problems to MedWatch.

The recall facts

A fruit chew sold as a supplement held a prescription drug the label did not list.

We read a trade-press report of the recall announcement. It says Alpha Male Plus of Tucson, Arizona, the US distributor, recalled all lots within expiry on July 20, 2021, after tadalafil was found. Tadalafil is the active ingredient in Cialis. It was not declared on the label.

What the notice says about who made it

The recall notice says the product was made by a Tucson physician who concealed the tadalafil from the distributor. That is the company's statement, as reported. We have not checked it, and we add no view of our own. We name no one.

The company told consumers to stop using the product, return or discard it, and report problems to MedWatch, the FDA's reporting program.

Why it matters for medicine users

Tadalafil can lower blood pressure to dangerous levels when taken with nitrates (FDA, X10 hidden-drug notice). People who take nitrates for chest pain should never take an ED drug unless a doctor says so. A product that hides one makes that check impossible.

Alpha Male Plus is not Alpha-Male

Two similar names appear in FDA records. Do not mix them.

The Alpha-Male notice says the product was sold on various websites including Amazon.com, and possibly some stores. The two actions are about different products on different dates.

What a chew or gummy format changes

Nothing about the risk. A sweet format makes a product look like a snack, not a drug. FDA does not approve dietary supplements before they are sold (FDA, Q&A on dietary supplements), and the NCCIH notes that products marketed for sexual enhancement may contain prescription drugs not listed on the label (NCCIH, Using Dietary Supplements Wisely). Read gummies vs capsules vs pills for what format does and does not tell you.

Stallion Power is also a gummy, and we are plain about where that leaves us. We found no source that shows hidden drugs in it, and we hold no lab report that shows there are none. See tainted enhancement products for the cases we have read.

Next step. If you ever took a product named in a recall, stop, tell your doctor and report any reaction to MedWatch. Keep taking prescribed medicine, and ask a pharmacist before you add any supplement.
