Ashwagandha for Men: Stress, Libido and Safety

Quick answer

Ashwagandha has limited human data. Studies suggest possible benefit for stress, and NCCIH says limited evidence ties 2 to 4 months of use to higher testosterone and better sperm quality (MSK, Ashwagandha) (NCCIH, Ashwagandha). Neither source says it improves erections. Rare liver injury has been reported (NIH LiverTox, Ashwagandha). Stallion Power lists it sixth, at most 13.7 mg per gummy.

What does the research say about ashwagandha for men?

The best-supported use is stress, and even that rests on limited data.

Memorial Sloan Kettering says human data are limited, and studies on stress and anxiety suggest possible benefit but need higher-quality evidence (MSK, Ashwagandha). NCCIH adds that some preparations may help with insomnia and stress, while evidence on anxiety is unclear (NCCIH, Ashwagandha).

For men specifically, NCCIH says limited evidence suggests taking ashwagandha for 2 to 4 months may be linked to higher testosterone and better sperm quality. It also says evidence is insufficient for athletic performance and several other uses (NCCIH, Ashwagandha).

Neither page says ashwagandha improves erections or sexual function (MSK, Ashwagandha) (NCCIH, Ashwagandha). Libido and erections are not the same thing as stress relief, so a man who feels more relaxed has not shown a change in sexual function.

Claims against evidence

Ashwagandha claims and what NIH and Memorial Sloan Kettering say
ClaimEvidence in the sources
Stress reliefPossible benefit; better studies needed (MSK, Ashwagandha)
Higher testosteroneLimited evidence at 2 to 4 months (NCCIH, Ashwagandha)
Erections or libidoNot stated by either source (MSK, Ashwagandha) (NCCIH, Ashwagandha)
Long-term safetyNot established; may be safe up to 3 months (NCCIH, Ashwagandha)

The liver and thyroid cautions

Clinical trials have not tied ashwagandha to raised liver enzymes. Yet liver injury has been reported with commercial products labeled as containing it. Onset is usually 2 to 12 weeks after starting, with jaundice and itching. Most cases are mild to moderate and clear within 1 to 4 months of stopping, although rare severe cases occurred, mainly in people with existing liver disease. NIH LiverTox rates it a likely cause of liver injury (NIH LiverTox, Ashwagandha).

Memorial Sloan Kettering also reports thyrotoxicosis that resolved after stopping, and possible extra drowsiness with sedatives (MSK, Ashwagandha). NCCIH does not recommend it for people with thyroid or autoimmune disorders and says to avoid it in pregnancy, while breastfeeding, and with hormone-sensitive prostate cancer (NCCIH, Ashwagandha).

  • Yellow skin or eyes, dark urine or itching: stop and call a doctor.
  • Thyroid, diabetes or blood pressure medicine: ask first (NCCIH, Ashwagandha).
  • Surgery planned: tell the surgeon (NCCIH, Ashwagandha).

How much ashwagandha is in a gummy?

The Stallion Power label lists Ashwagandha sixth in its 82 mg proprietary blend and prints no amount. Blend lines go in descending order by weight (21 CFR 101.36, Supplement Facts). Sixth place caps it at 82 divided by 6, or 13.7 mg. Caffeine is printed at 5 mg in fifth place, so the tighter ceiling is 5 mg.

Typical product doses are 150 to 600 mg once to three times a day (NIH LiverTox, Ashwagandha). A 5 mg ceiling is far below that, and the LiverTox chapter does not describe liver risk at such a small amount. We cannot say either way.

This is arithmetic on a printed label, not a lab result, and a real gummy can hold less. The ashwagandha page has the full line.

A sensible next step

If stress or low desire is your concern, a clinician can look at sleep, mood, medicines and hormone levels. Keep taking prescribed medicine, and read the side effects guide before you add anything new.
