Diabetes and Sugar in Gummy Supplements: A Label Check

Quick answer

Each Stallion Power gummy has 3 g of carbohydrate, all of it sugar and all added, with 10 calories. Corn syrup and cane sugar are the first two other ingredients, and sorbitol liquid is also listed. The amount is small, but it is added sugar. If you have diabetes, ask your clinician or pharmacist before adding the gummy daily.

What the label says about sugar

One gummy has 10 calories, 3 g of total carbohydrate, 3 g of sugar and 3 g of added sugar.

The label gives 6% DV for added sugar and 1% DV for carbohydrate. Sodium is 4 mg. The other ingredients are listed in this order: corn syrup, cane sugar, water, apple pectin, sorbitol liquid, natural flavors, citric acid and sodium citrate dihydrate. No gelatin is listed. The label does not give a sorbitol amount. See the full supplement facts.

How 3 g compares with daily limits

The Dietary Guidelines say to keep added sugars under 10 percent of daily calories. On 2,000 calories that is about 200 calories, or roughly 50 grams (Dietary Guidelines, Added sugars). The AHA suggests no more than 150 calories a day of added sugar for men, about 9 teaspoons (AHA, Added sugars). At 4 calories per gram, that is about 37.5 g, so one gummy is about 8 percent of it. That conversion is our arithmetic, not a figure printed on the AHA page.

So the gummy is small next to a day's limit. It is still added sugar, and it adds to everything else you eat. A sweetened tea can hold 29 g and a regular soda 37 g (Dietary Guidelines, Added sugars).

Diabetes questions we cannot answer

The label gives no blood sugar or glycemic data. We found no study of this gummy's effect on glucose. We will not say it is suitable for people with diabetes. That is a call for your clinician, who knows your medicines and your targets.

Two blend lines raise a separate question. NCCIH says ashwagandha may interact with diabetes medicines (NCCIH, Ashwagandha). MSK lists diabetes medicines among tribulus interactions, with unknown relevance (MSK, Tribulus terrestris). The amounts in a gummy are undisclosed and small, but a pharmacist should see the list. Diabetes is also a listed cause of erection problems (NIDDK, ED causes).

Ask your clinician
  • Does 3 g of added sugar a day fit my plan?
  • Do any of the nine herbs interact with my diabetes medicine?
  • Should I check my glucose more often when I start something new?

Sorbitol in gummy supplements

Sorbitol is a sugar alcohol. FDA requires the statement "Excess consumption may have a laxative effect" on food that could lead to a daily intake of 50 grams of sorbitol (21 CFR 184.1835, Sorbitol). One gummy with sorbitol liquid is far below that level, and we do not suggest this product reaches it. The label gives no sorbitol amount, so we cannot give a number.

If you notice loose stools or bloating, stop and tell your doctor. The label asks you to discontinue use if you have any adverse reaction. See the side effects guide.

Teeth and next steps

The ADA says bacteria in plaque make acids after you eat or drink sugar, and the acids attack enamel (ADA MouthHealthy, Diet and dental health). Its page does not mention gummies specifically. It advises limiting added sugars and drinking water, so rinsing with water after a gummy is sensible.

Your next step: read the label with your clinician and ask the three questions above. Keep taking prescribed medicine, and do not change a dose on your own.
