Maca Root Benefits for Men: Libido and Energy Evidence

Quick answer

Maca root has only a few small human trials. Memorial Sloan Kettering says early findings hint at better subjective sexual well-being in men, while a systematic review calls the evidence limited (MSK, Maca) (Shin 2010, Maca systematic review). Stallion Power lists maca extract second, so it weighs at most 41 mg per gummy by label arithmetic.

What does the research say about maca?

Maca is a root sold as a powder or extract. The research is small, and reviewers say so plainly.

Memorial Sloan Kettering reports that only a few small human trials exist. For men, preliminary findings suggest a possible gain in subjective sexual well-being, while results on semen quality are mixed (MSK, Maca). A systematic review of maca for sexual function found four randomized trials. Two reported positive effects, one in healthy menopausal women and one in healthy men. A trial in cyclists found no effect. One trial in men with erectile dysfunction showed a significant change on the IIEF-5 questionnaire (Shin 2010, Maca systematic review).

The authors still concluded there is "limited evidence" because the number of trials, the total sample and the average quality were too small for firm conclusions (Shin 2010, Maca systematic review).

Libido, erections and energy: what is supported?

Claims about maca and what the sources we read say
ClaimWhat the sources say
DesirePossible gain in subjective sexual well-being in men; evidence rated limited (MSK, Maca)
ErectionsOne small trial in men with ED reported an effect on IIEF-5; not enough for firm conclusions (Shin 2010, Maca systematic review)
Antidepressant-related sexual problemsA systematic review found high-dose maca improved them (MSK, Maca)
EnergyNot addressed in the two sources we read
DosesNot given in the sources we read

The energy part of the headline is the weakest. We found nothing in our sources that tests maca for energy in men, so we do not repeat that claim.

How much maca is in a gummy?

The Stallion Power label lists maca extract second in an 82 mg proprietary blend. No per-ingredient amount is printed.

Blend ingredients must appear in descending order by weight (21 CFR 101.36, Supplement Facts). Second place means maca weighs less than or equal to the first ingredient and cannot exceed half of the 82 mg alone, so the plain ceiling is 41 mg. Using the printed 5 mg of caffeine in fifth place, the tighter ceiling is 33.5 mg.

What the ceiling does not tell you

It is arithmetic on a printed label, not a lab result, and a real gummy can hold less. The sources we read give no maca dose to compare it with, so we cannot say whether 33.5 mg is a lot or a little.

The full table is on the maca root page, and the other eight lines are on the ingredients overview.

Side effects and cautions

Reported reactions are mostly subjective: changes in menstrual cycles, moodiness, cramps, gastritis and insomnia (MSK, Maca). A few points matter for men:

  • Maca may interfere with testosterone blood tests. Tell your provider before a test that measures testosterone (MSK, Maca).
  • With a hormone-sensitive cancer, talk to your provider before use (MSK, Maca).
  • If you are pregnant or nursing, or take medicines, ask your doctor first, as the Stallion Power label says.

Keep taking any prescribed medicine. "Natural" does not always mean safe.

A sensible next step

If low desire or erection trouble is the reason you are reading, a clinician can look for causes such as blood pressure, diabetes or low testosterone. Maca is not a substitute for that check. Read how the whole blend compares in the supplement facts guide.
