What Are Testosterone Boosters? A Plain Explanation

Quick answer

Testosterone boosters are over-the-counter supplements, usually herb or vitamin blends, sold with the hope of lifting testosterone or male drive. They are not hormone drugs. Human evidence for the common herbs is thin and mixed. Low testosterone is a medical finding that needs a blood test, not a guess from a label.

What does testosterone booster mean?

A testosterone booster is a dietary supplement marketed to men who want higher drive, energy or muscle. It is a sales category, not a medical one.

Most products mix herbs, minerals and amino acids in capsules, powders or gummies. Nothing in the bottle is testosterone itself.

That is a key split. Prescription testosterone is a drug given after a doctor confirms a deficiency. The American Urological Association defines testosterone deficiency as low testosterone levels together with symptoms or signs, and says a man is a candidate for therapy only when both are present (AUA, Testosterone Deficiency Guideline). A supplement label cannot tell you either one.

The FDA does not approve supplements before they are sold, and it does not approve supplement labels (FDA, Q&A on dietary supplements). So the phrase "testosterone booster" is a marketing label that nobody has checked for you.

What do these products claim?

Ask what does testosterone booster do, or what do testosterone boosters offer, and sellers say they support drive, energy and muscle. The purpose of a testosterone booster is a hope, not a result. Why take testosterone booster at all? Usually for one of those three. Legally, supplements may make structure and function claims about the normal body. They may not claim to diagnose, treat or prevent a disease, and the label must say the claim has not been evaluated by the FDA (FDA, Structure/function claims).

Low testosterone does have real symptoms. MedlinePlus lists low sex drive, erectile dysfunction, infertility, loss of muscle mass and others, and says the test is a blood draw, usually in the morning (MedlinePlus, Testosterone test). Those symptoms also have many other causes.

Check before you buy

If you suspect low testosterone, ask a doctor about a blood test first. A booster can hide a cause that needs care, such as diabetes or heart disease. Keep taking any prescribed medicine.

What does the evidence say about common ingredients?

Booster formulas lean on a short list of herbs. The sources we read are cautious about all of them. None of this is a lab result on any finished product.

Common booster herbs and what the sources say
IngredientWhat we found
TribulusA review of 11 studies concluded it is ineffective for increasing testosterone in humans (Qureshi 2014, Tribulus review)
AshwagandhaLimited evidence that 2 to 4 months of use may raise testosterone; long-term safety is not established (NCCIH, Ashwagandha)
MacaOnly a few small human trials; the evidence for sexual function is limited (MSK, Maca) (Shin 2010, Maca systematic review)

Read each row as a limit, not a promise. Positive results often came from combined products (MSK, Tribulus terrestris). You can read more on the pages for tribulus and ashwagandha.

Where does Stallion Power fit?

Stallion Power is a gummy sold as a dietary supplement. The front text we have from the label reads "MALE ENHANCEMENT GUMMIES†", "BOOST PERFORMANCE†" and "SUPPORT CONFIDENCE†". None of those lines uses the word testosterone, and we do not describe it as a testosterone product.

The label lists an 82 mg proprietary blend of nine ingredients, one of which is tribulus, plus caffeine at 5 mg. The blend amounts are not split out, so the dose of each herb is unknown. Our supplement facts page shows the arithmetic ceilings. They are not lab results.

Skip it and ask first if

you take nitrates, have heart disease, are pregnant or nursing, or take any medicine. Talk to your doctor or pharmacist before using any supplement for male drive.

Next step: read the label of any booster you are considering, then book a blood test if you suspect low testosterone. More background is in the guides hub.
