What Is Catuaba? A Brazilian Herb Under the Microscope

Quick answer

Catuaba is a name applied to several plants. The bark sold is mostly Trichilia catigua, but some lots carry other plants (Catuaba, Trichilia catigua review). The research is mostly lab and animal work, and we found no human trial for sexual function. Stallion Power lists catuaba extract third, so it weighs at most 27.3 mg per gummy by label arithmetic.

What is catuaba?

Catuaba is not one plant. The name is applied to several, which makes it hard to know what is in a bottle.

A review of Trichilia catigua says the bark sold as catuaba is mostly that species, but some lots carry the name of Anemopaegma arvense. For a third plant, Erythroxylum vacciniifolium, the review says efficacy and safety of use have not been scientifically proven (Catuaba, Trichilia catigua review).

That naming problem matters when you read a label. "Catuaba Extract" does not say which plant, which part or how strong. The Stallion Power label does not say either, so we cannot tell you.

What does the research show?

Most of the evidence is laboratory or animal work. The review describes antidepressant-like and memory effects in rodents, relaxation of animal corpus cavernosum tissue, and antioxidant, antimicrobial and antiviral effects in vitro (Catuaba, Trichilia catigua review).

Rodent studiesAntidepressant-like and memory effectsNo
Animal tissueRelaxation of corpus cavernosum tissueNot tested in men
Test tubeAntioxidant, antimicrobial, antiviralNo
Human trialCatuama, a multi-plant product, for burning mouth syndromeNo

The only human study the review describes tested a multi-plant product for burning mouth syndrome, not for sexual function (Catuaba, Trichilia catigua review). We could not find a human sexual-function trial of catuaba in the sources we opened. So nobody can say catuaba raises desire or testosterone, and we do not.

Is catuaba safe?

Data are thin. In mice, short-term toxicity tests of the Catuama product showed no signs of toxicity. In one rat study, infusions had a harmful effect on the number and volume of Leydig cells, which are cells in the testis (Catuaba, Trichilia catigua review). Rat findings do not transfer directly to men, and we found no NIH or Memorial Sloan Kettering page on catuaba to read.

What this means

The record is incomplete, not reassuring and not alarming. If you are pregnant, nursing, taking medicine or managing a condition, ask your doctor before using it, as the Stallion Power label advises.

How much catuaba is in a gummy?

The label lists Catuaba Extract third in the 82 mg proprietary blend and prints no amount. Blend lines run in descending order by weight (21 CFR 101.36, Supplement Facts). Third place caps it at 82 divided by 3, or 27.3 mg. The printed 5 mg of caffeine in fifth place lets us tighten that to 24 mg.

We found no human dose for sexual function to compare with. This is arithmetic on a printed label, not a lab result, and a real gummy can hold less.

A sensible next step

Treat catuaba as a traditional herb with unproven benefits. If a seller tells you what it does, ask which plant, which part and what amount. If the answer is missing, that tells you something. Keep taking prescribed medicine, and ask a doctor about any change in sexual health.
