Testosterone Booster: A Plain Guide for US Readers

Quick answer

A testosterone booster is a supplement marketed around testosterone. It is not a hormone, and the FDA does not approve supplements before sale. Low testosterone is a medical finding, measured with a blood test and tied to symptoms. If you suspect it, see a doctor first. Stallion Power is not sold as a testosterone medicine.

Stallion Power is sold as a male vitality gummy, not as a testosterone medicine.

What the term means

Testosterone booster is a sales label, not a medical one.

Products sold under that name are dietary supplements. The FDA does not have the authority to approve them before they are marketed (FDA, Q&A on dietary supplements). They often hold herbs and amino acids, and the claims on the front are limited to structure and function wording (FDA, Structure/function claims).

Testosterone itself is a hormone. A doctor can prescribe it for men who meet a clinical definition. A supplement is a different thing, and its label cannot tell you which one you need.

What low testosterone is, and how it is checked

The AUA defines testosterone deficiency as low testosterone levels combined with symptoms (AUA, Testosterone Deficiency Guideline). MedlinePlus lists symptoms in men who have gone through puberty such as low sex drive and erectile dysfunction (MedlinePlus, Testosterone test). The same symptoms have many other causes, including diabetes, heart disease, some medicines and stress (NIDDK, ED causes). That is why the AUA ED guideline says to measure morning total testosterone in men with ED, along with a full history and exam (AUA, Erectile Dysfunction Guideline).

What the research says about common ingredients

Ingredient claims are the weak point. A systematic review of 11 tribulus studies concluded the evidence suggests it is ineffective for increasing testosterone in humans (Qureshi 2014, Tribulus review). MSK adds that rises occurred only when tribulus was part of a combined supplement (MSK, Tribulus terrestris). Ashwagandha has limited human data (MSK, Ashwagandha). We found no human sexual-function trial for catuaba (Catuaba, Trichilia catigua review).

For a finished product the gap is wider, because we found no trial of one. Our posts on whether male enhancement gummies work and how to judge a testosterone booster list go deeper: see do male enhancement gummies work and how to judge any list.

Safety points that apply to any booster

Safety first

Nitrates and ED drugs need a doctor or pharmacist first. Chest pain, fainting, an erection longer than four hours, or sudden vision or hearing loss needs emergency care.
